Asks, gives, gossip: wedding planning edition
Yenta: the newsletter for matching romance, jobs, and more
It’s been a while since I sent one of these. Oops! It’s been a busy time. Integrity Institute is doing great. We have 7 staff now. A TON of behind-the-scenes impact. Oh, and wedding planning. Or, lack of planning. I might need your help there.
But first — here’s the latest Yenta Thread! (And as a reminder you can always find it by going to sahar.io/yentathread)
We’ve got some computer people looking for jobs. We’ve got some housing swaps. We’ve got a nascent “let’s introduce our hot friends to each other” energy. Check it out.
My personal asks and gives:
So I said I have been wedding planning. More specifically, I have been fretting about wedding planning. Can you help me? I need to find:
An event or wedding planner in Rochester, NY.
One who gets that Sarah and I are weirdos who:
Do not want a perfect wedding.
Are nerds and not into traditional gender roles
Are jewish
Do not live in Rochester right now
Do not want a “Basic” (in the sense of personality) wedding
Just want a big fun picnic thing with friends and family, and have no intention of becoming bridezillas or paying a heavy wedding tax
I also need to find a Rabbi who can marry us
Preferably a friend I already know, but for whom I forgot was a rabbi?
This is less urgent, but ideas for what makes a great fun wedding would be nice. Katie Jo already sent me a bunch. The general vibe we’re thinking of is “this is actually a picnic”. I’m not going to wear a suit. Maybe we’ll use paper towels and solo cups and disposable utensils. But just because it won’t be fancy doesn’t mean it can’t be fun. Should there be a talent show? Lawn games? What events should we facilitate the day after, or the day before? Open to ideas.
Lastly, heads up, Integrity Institute will start looking for a comms person soon. We don’t have a job description or anything yet. But if you go to our hidden jobs website and fill out the general application form you can get a leg up.
Some key leads I have for you:
As always, if interested, you can hit up the people directly, or reply to this email and I’ll introduce you.
As always, got more? Jump into the thread and start swapping.
Are you close to social movement work and writing/journalism? Are you looking for gigs? Hit me up.
Liana is hiring a director of development for MAPS
Ravi is looking for a dogsitter who lives in the SF Bay area and might enjoy the change of pace of being in the suburbs.
I’m actively trying to find some eligible bachelors (and bachelorettes) for delightfully attractive friends of mine in NYC. (And everywhere else, to be clear!)
Deepti Doshi is hiring SWEs and designers at New Public
Daisy wants to move to NYC, at least for a bit. Looking for a housing swap.
Ariel is thinking of moving to San Francisco and is looking for perfect community house.
I know a guy who is looking for people who want to write books on how digital tech is affecting our ideas. Is that you?
I know a ton of amazing integrity folks who were recently laid off or just don’t want to work at a place like Twitter or Facebook any more.
Jessy at Meraki is very interested in hiring more people. For so many different kinds of jobs.
“We still need really good people across our entire stack including:
embedded C.
Embedded Linux.
Cisco certified tech support workers (last I heard starting at $100,000/yr).
Server backend engineers.
Ruby engineers.
Maybe Android/iOS? If not, Meraki MIGHT take them if they are GOOD.
react.js engineers.
PostgresQL engineers.
Embedded experience AND management experience.
Probably people with good C++ experience.
Routing experts (BGP, VPN). [Border Gateway Protocol, implementing VPN technology.]
Trusted Platform Module (TPM) experience. [Commonly used for modern hardware assisted cryptography. TPMs are for storage crypto keys keys, cryptographic signature verification of the whole system from boot, etc, and have nothing to do with crypto mining]
Early board bringup engineers.
Cellular modem experts.
Hardware testbed engineers.
SOME rust work for cloud native applications.
Probably Sales.
Computer Vision experts.
etc
More updates about me:
I’m going to speak at SXSW soon.
I spoke at the Tech and Social Cohesion conference in SF just a week or so ago. People told me I did a very good job. Things like “you were my favorite” and “wow I just had to get to know you after you spoke”. Felt good!
I’ve been posting a lot on the Integrity Institute account (including sharing internal docs). I’m proud of this one in particular.
Been feeling more jewish lately.
A little bit of a professional update
Cool things I did a while ago that I forgot to mention
I got sick a few times over the last few months. Really upsetting and plans-foiling.
Lastly, some meta comments
This is the first session of Yenta that didn’t feature someone! It’s the first one in a long time too. I am going to try to do more posts, without trying to make one “perfect”. I keep not having the time to profile someone, and honestly the point of these emails is to push people to fill out the forms and go post on the thread, not to be perfectly polished. So … I’m trying!
Hope to talk to you soon. Be well, and I always love email replies.
